Let's make something! ✏️

Three lessons to start with. Each one uses ordinary materials, takes about ten minutes, and can be done sitting at a kitchen table.

How to Draw a Cartoon Lion 🦁

You will need

Paper, a pencil, and coloured pencils or crayons in orange, gold and brown.

Steps

  1. Draw a circle in the middle of your page. That is the lion's face.
  2. Draw a bigger wobbly circle around it, like a cloud. That is the mane — it does not need to be neat.
  3. Add two small round ears poking out of the mane at the top.
  4. Put two dots for eyes, a small triangle nose, and a wide curved smile underneath.
  5. Colour the mane in gold and orange, going round and round. Press harder in some places so it looks fluffy.
  6. Add three little whisker lines on each side. Done — give him a name.

Magical Watercolour Sunset 🌅

You will need

Thick paper, watercolour paints, a fat brush, a jar of water, and a paper towel.

Steps

  1. Wet the whole top half of your paper with clean water using the fat brush.
  2. While it is still wet, paint a stripe of purple right across the top. Watch it spread on its own.
  3. Under the purple, paint a stripe of orange. Let the two colours touch and blend — do not fix it.
  4. Under the orange, paint a stripe of yellow all the way to the middle of the page.
  5. Wait. Really wait, until the paper is completely dry. This is the hard part.
  6. With black paint and a thin brush, add two palm-tree shapes at the bottom. Trunk first, then leaves like fingers.

You will need

Air-dry clay in black and white, a plastic knife or lolly stick, and a mat to work on.

Steps

  1. Roll a big ball of white clay for the body and a smaller one for the head.
  2. Press the head gently onto the body until they stick together.
  3. Roll four small black sausages for the arms and legs. Press them on.
  4. Roll two tiny black balls, squash them flat, and stick them on the head as ears.
  5. Make two more flat black ovals for the eye patches, and two tiny balls for the eyes.
  6. Use the lolly stick to draw a little smile. Leave it somewhere safe to dry overnight.

More lessons are on the way. If your child finishes one of these, we would love to see how it turned out — send it in.
